TCAH is pleased to offer more artist seminars in 2009-10, with the generous support of the Colorado Council on the Arts. The CCA is committed to helping us bring a free lecture series to the artists and residents of Telluride in order to help advance our artists' professional skills! Past Seminars: How to approach collectors/get your work into collections, by Meredith Nemirov, March 16, 2010, at 12:30 pm, Wilkinson Public Library. Learn how to approach people in a friendly way and develop collectors, and get your work into collections. Meredith is an award-winning artist from Ridgway, Colorado and is routinely accepted to Artist In Residencies around the world. How to Photograph Your Art by Stacy Smith of Wildcat Studios, March 23, 2010 at 5pm at Wilkinson Library. Learn how to photograph your art professionally for your portfolio. Stacy is a gallery owner in Telluride and has photographed, vinyl transferred and framed most of the art around!
Pitch to Win! How to communicate effectively, by Martha Gelnaw, March 2, 2010, at 5 pm, Wilkinson Public Library. Learn how to present yourself professionally and effectively to others, whether you are an artist, a business person or just interested in the topic. Martha is a communications trainer coming all the way from New York City. How to find your artists' muse, by Amy Boebel, February 17, 2010, at 12:30 pm, Wilkinson Public Library. Learn tricks and tips on finding inspiration all around you, and the specific muse that will feed your art. By Amy Boebel, Stronghouse Artist. How to get accepted to International Art Competitions, by Sue Hobby and Amy Boebel, February 2, 2010, at 5pm at Wilkinson Public Library. Learn how to promote yourself, or your art, by entering and being accepted to International Art Competitions! Recently back from the World of Wearable Art competition in New Zealand, where they won two awards, Sue and Amy will help you organize your art and present it in such a way to further your success entering international competitions. The Reality of Being a Professional Artist, by Jared David Paul, January 12th, 2010, at 5 pm at Stronghouse Studios. Hear all about the realities of being a professional artist, including the pros and cons, including how to avoid the cons! Jared David Paul is a recent Telluride transplant, who has exhibited world-wide. Stop by and be entertained, educated and enthused. How to assemble a Portfolio, by Pia, December 9, 2009, at 12:30 at Wilkinson Public Library. Learn how to organize a professional portfolio, including determining which of your works should be included. A question and answer session will follow the presentation. Marketing 103: Renegade Marketing - How to promote yourself and your art event by Beth Roberts, Wednesday April 1, 12:30 pm, @ Wilkinson Library. Learn how to promote yourself, or your art event, through renegade marketing (beyond normal public relations), including how to write a press release, get on the radio, the tv, and more. Now more important than ever, artists need to learn alternative ways to get out the message, without a lot of cost. Come with your questions, and your events, and learn how to get your message out! How to approach a gallery as an Artist will be held Thursday, March 19, at Stronghouse Studios, 283 South Fir Street, 5-6 pm, by Baerbel Hacke (manager of Telluride Gallery of Fine Arts), due to popular demand. How do you approach a gallery with your work? What are galleries looking for? Learn about approaching a gallery, having a gallery represent your work, and what kind of exposure and restrictions you may expect. A Grant writing seminar for Artists was held Wednesday, February 11, at Wilkinson Library, 12-1:30 pm, by Renee Marr, due to popular demand. Offering grant writing tips for artists, this seminar covered artists' statements, your mission, quantifying your needs, documenting your art, and cohesive writing, as well as tips for researching and writing grants, developing goals and objectives, and more. Marketing 102: How to brand yourself as an artist. In January 2009, local artist and graphic designer Ally Crilly offered a seminar on how to brand yourself as an artist. Artists learned the importance of having an artist brand, the use of logos in your business as an artist; professional presentation of yourself as an artist; and asked many more questions of Ms. Crilly. Artists were able to learn hands-on techniques to matching your logo and brand to your business card, letterhead, website and more. Websites 101: How to design your own website. By popular demand, in December 2008, local graphic designer and web designer Molly Papier offered a seminar on how to design your own website. Artists learned about different design options when hiring a contractor or choosing to design their own website. Molly provided the basics to get started: commonly used technical terms, types of websites, image preparation, and tips on website promotion. Artists were able to bring their own laptops to learn, in-class, how to set up their own templates. Marketing 101: How to market yourself as an artist. In September 2008, local graphic designer Sandy Bassett offered a seminar on how to market yourself as an artist. Artists learned great strategies to use to present themselves professionally, communicate better with the media, present a professional artists' portfolio (including learning how to assemble images), as well as how websites, exhibits, postcards, brochures and branding can help sell art. How I Made it as an Artist. In August 2008, local artist Lisa Dawn Gold offered a seminar on how she made it as a successful artist. Artists learned how Ms. Gold made it from an amateur artist to having her work shown in numerous galleries, such as the Saatchi UK gallery and several New York Galleries. "How I Made it as an artist" continues to be one of the most successful TCAH free Artist Seminars, highlighting local artists who have succeeded professionally. How to be an Artist in Residence. In late March 2008, local artist Meredith Nemirov offered a seminar on how to become an artist in residence at any one of our nation's numerous artist in residency programs. Ms. Nemirov had just returned from the great Anderson Ranch residency program, and offered tips and suggestions for those seeking a similar experience of creating art full-time during a residency. How to Bronze Cast. In early March 2008, local artist Michael McCullough offered a seminar on how to bronze cast. Mr. McCullough has several bronze statues in Telluride and Mountain Village, including the recently unveiled "Hoot" rotating statue in the Telluride Ski Area's terrain park. Explaining the process, participants were able to better understand the process and how to take their art from clay to bronze.
